Barry Sheerman, the Labour MP for Huddersfield and chairman of the House of Commons education select committee, said Oxford and Cambridge had lost millions of pounds when 10 new countries joined the EU because their students were then treated as home students liable to pay the set £1,150 fee rather than overseas fees of up to £20,000 a year.
